Delhi Airport’s third runway will finally reopen for operations on September 20, 2026, after being closed for seven months for repair and upgrade work. The reopening is a big update, as it means better landings, fewer delays and smoother rides. Here’s what has been changed.
Delhi Airport’s Third Runway To Reopen On September 20
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which manages and operates Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, recently announced that Runway 11R/29L, or the third runway, is all set to become operational on September 20, 2026, following the receipt of all necessary regulatory approvals.
According to Hindustan Times, the runway was shut in February 2026 for a rehabilitation project. The project involved extensive upgrades to improve operational safety, efficiency, resilience and long-term capacity. The upgraded runway is now ready to be used after undergoing all required inspections.

Third Runway Gets Major Upgrades For Smooth Operations
According to Hindustan Times, the third runway at Delhi Airport was commissioned in 2007 and had been in continuous service for 17 years. Now, let’s talk about what has changed. Reportedly, the upgrades involved runway resurfacing, permanent threshold displacement of Runway 29L and the construction of a new Rapid Exit Taxiway. Apart from that, the authorities have also upgraded airfield ground lighting systems and associated civil and electrical infrastructure.
Authorities expect these enhancements to improve runway efficiency, optimise aircraft movement and reduce runway occupancy time. They are also expected to strengthen operational reliability during changing weather conditions. The upgraded runway is also expected to help the airport manage its daily rush of flights more easily.
You would like to know that Delhi Airport has also introduced dedicated gates for light travellers. Passengers carrying hand luggage or travelling without luggage can use separate gates, allowing them to skip the regular queues and head directly to the security checks. This can help save a lot of time, especially during busy hours.
