Delhi IGI Airport

Delhi’s forest department has now approved the transplantation of 32 trees at the Indira Gandhi International Airport expansion site. Authorities have prohibited tree-felling and ensured compensatory planting of 320 saplings at the Delhi airport. Here’s more on this important update and what we know so far.

Forest Department Allows Tree Transplantation At Delhi’s IGI Airport

According to Hindustan Times, Delhi’s state forest and wildlife department has issued an important order related to the expansion of apron facilities at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Authorities now have official permission to transplant 32 trees. However, tree-felling is prohibited as per the order. The activity has been allowed under the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, 1994.  The 32 trees are being transplanted to make space for the apron expansion at the airport.

Reportedly, the works under this initiative will include apron maintenance, repair and overhaul. For the saplings, the compensatory plantation site proposed at New Udaan Bhawan, opposite Terminal 3 at IGI Airport, was inspected by the concerned field staff. It was found suitable and sufficient to plant 320 tree saplings.

₹18.24 Lakh Deposited To Carry Out Transplantation Work

These saplings will have to be maintained for a period of seven years. Initially, the authorities had sought permission to cut and transplant 34 trees. But after inspection, the forest department granted permission for only 32. According to Hindustan Times, ₹18.24 lakh has been deposited for carrying out the transplantation and maintenance.

Moreover, a tree officer must be informed at least three days before starting the work. The transplantation cannot be carried out if the tree has active nests of birds or other wildlife. Each tree planted or transplanted will be geotagged. Details of the plantation carried out will also have to be uploaded on the forest department’s portal.
