Emma, who is backpacking across Asia, shares her travel experiences with her Instagram followers. She goes by the username @discoverwithemma_ and has around 48k followers. Recently, she uploaded a video rating eight Indian cities out of 10 based on how safe she felt. The video has now gone viral. She captioned it as, “Here is my reasoning 🇮🇳 (no sugar-coating, just my honest experience after weeks across 8 cities)”
Here is how she rated the cities:
- Delhi: -1/10
Emma called the city “overwhelming”. She said constant stares, crowding, and noise made her feel on edge all the time. The backpacker added, “I would not travel here alone at night.”
- Agra: 3/10
While Emma admired the Taj Mahal, she said locals tried to scam her as a foreign tourist.
- Jaipur: 5/10
Emma felt Jaipur was better than Delhi and Agra. The city is traditional, and the forts felt safe to explore. Emma added that she would not travel solo here at night.
- Pushkar: 6.5/10
Pushkar scored relatively higher. Emma said locals were respectful and “chilled out”. She called it a “breath of fresh air” but admitted she was scammed here by the locals.
Other Destinations Rated By Emma
- Udaipur: 8/10
Udaipur scored high compared to other cities. Emma said, “It’s the first place in North India where I actually felt comfortable walking around alone in the daytime.” She also appreciated its beautiful lakes and polite locals.
- Mumbai: 6.5/10
Emma said people here mind their own business. She called Mumbai “busy and unpredictable.” She felt safe but not “100% relaxed.”
- Goa: 8/10
Emma called Goa “freedom”. She said travellers can wear what they want and no one cares. She warned to be cautious with nightlife and avoid dark beach walks. She added that during the daytime, Goa is “an absolute paradise.”
- Kerala: 9/10
Kerala topped her list. Emma said it is the calmest and cleanest state. And we agree! Kerala is one of the safest cities in India, especially for women travelling solo. She added, “Locals are polite in Kerala and transport feels safe.”
Emma ended her post by saying, “India is intense, beautiful, frustrating and heart-warming all at once. You can have the best day and the worst day in the same hour. But with awareness, respect for local culture, and a bit of humour – you’ll be fine.”
Netizens flooded her comments with their opinions. One wrote, “After seeing your ratings, I’m dying to visit Kerala! It’s been on my bucket list for ages!” Another said, “Keralites wonder how we lost 1 mark” Many agreed with her, while a few questioned her ratings. At the end of the day, it reflects her personal experience as a foreign woman travelling in India.
