Delhi LPG Shortage: Schools, PGs, Gurdwaras & Community Kitchens To Limit Food Menus

The ongoing LPG crisis all over India is impacting hundreds of food businesses. In Delhi, several community kitchens have also begun discontinuing services or scaling back operations, forcing operators to trim menus and look for alternative solutions. Read on to find out more about the development.

Delhi Faces Massive LPG Shortage

As per a report by the Hindustan Times, from langars to Atal canteens, the LPG shortage is forcing food services in Delhi to scale down operations. One canteen at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is cutting down its menu short as of now. Another person who runs a canteen at the School of Languages stated that he will stop selling snacks and will only offer tea. He told the news portal that the cylinder that earlier cost around ₹1,100 went up to ₹1,600 a few days ago, and now it has increased to ₹2,800-₹3,000, which is difficult to afford for lower-middle-class people. The students living on campus also revealed that the popular Ganga Dhaba may also discontinue their meals and will only serve tea and bread omelettes soon.

Schools, PG & Community Kitchens Forced To Limit Their Menu

Other schools, like the Delhi School of Economics, have temporarily discontinued their iconic mutton dosa from the canteen menu. The owner told the Hindustan Times that if the situation continues, they may have to remove several other items as well.

At Delhi University’s North Campus, PGs are also struggling to maintain regular food services due to the shortage of commercial gas cylinders. School kitchens are also preparing alternative plans. A school in Vasant Vihar, Delhi, has sent a message to parents stating the caterer has only two days of LPG stock left. If the situation continues to grow, the vendors will not be able to provide lunch and snacks starting Monday.

Famous community kitchens run under the Atal Canteen scheme have also reported operational stress. Speaking to Hindustan Times, several operators said the ongoing LPG shortage is making it harder to sustain services. However, a spokesperson for the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board said that all Atal Canteens are currently functioning normally, though some operators are finding it difficult to sustain the ₹5 subsidised meal programme.

The crisis have also hit gurdwaras in Delhi, as they are also running out of reserves and are finding it hard to maintain daily langars. If this continues, they will also have to start with limited langar for the time being.
