Delhi & Mumbai’s Rising AQI Equals Smoking 7 Cigarettes Daily; Here Are 5 Tips To Stay Safe

The skies of Delhi and Mumbai are blanketed in thick smog. The air quality in both cities is so hazardous that it’s becoming a serious problem now. You would be shocked to know that the worsening pollution in both cities is like breathing multiple cigarettes a day! Here are all the latest updates on the cities’ AQI and five ways you can stay safe during the rising pollution.

Delhi And Mumbai Record Toxic AQI Levels

Not just Delhi, even Mumbai is experiencing an alarming rise in its AQI levels. A smog-covered sky might be a common sight in Delhi, but even Mumbaikars woke up today to the air quality in the ‘very poor’ and ‘hazardous’ categories. As per a report by Times Now, some suburbs like Malad West and Borivali East reported AQI levels exceeding 300. PM2.5 levels have also surged. Breathing this toxic air is considered equal to the damage caused by smoking six to seven cigarettes a day. This is totally shocking!

Reportedly, not just the suburbs but Mumbai’s citywide AQI also rose sharply to 198 yesterday, on November 27. Low visibility and dense smog over the city have interfered with daily activities. And of course, even Delhi is in a similar condition, or we could say a worse one. As per a report by Hindustan Times, major areas in the capital recorded AQI above 300, including Burari, Anand Vihar, Chandni Chowk, ITO and more. Delhiites once again woke up to ‘very poor’ air quality on Thursday morning, just a day after restrictions under Stage-III of GRAP were revoked. The citywide AQI of Delhi stood at 351 at 8 am.

5 Ways To Stay Safe During Rising Pollution

Forecasts issued by IMD indicate that the air quality in Delhi is likely to remain in the ‘very poor’ category in the coming days. Since both Delhi and Mumbai are going through a similar situation and conditions are not expected to improve soon, we should take care of our health in our own ways. Here are five simple ways to stay safe during rising pollution in Mumbai and Delhi:

1. Wear a face mask: Wearing a mask is no longer optional. Opt for a high-quality mask like an N99 or N95 when you step out. Normal fabric masks might not work as well in this high level of pollution.

2. Minimise outdoor activities: Stay indoors as much as possible and step out only when necessary. The air outside is toxic, and it is best not to venture out until the conditions improve.

3. Install air purifiers or keep indoor plants: Air purifiers are helpful, but you can also keep indoor air-purifying plants like snake plants, spider plants and peace lilies.

4. Eat a healthy diet: Include antioxidant-rich foods like citrus fruits, nuts and leafy greens. Increase your water intake and stay hydrated.

5. Keep your indoor environment clean: Keep windows and doors shut during high-pollution days. Avoid burning incense sticks as they worsen indoor air quality.
