Delhi Opens 45 Atal Canteens Serving ₹5 Meals Twice A Day; What’s In The Thali?

To mark the 101st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Delhi government has launched a new scheme. 45 Atal Canteens have opened across the city, serving nutritious meals at just ₹5. The scheme was inaugurated at the Atal Canteen near Apna Bazaar in Nehru Nagar, Lajpat Nagar. Here is everything you need to know.

Affordable Meals At Atal Canteens In Delhi

According to a report by India Today, the new initiative will provide affordable meals at just ₹5. These meals are nutritious and filling. Workers, needy residents, labourers, and low-income families will now be able to enjoy hearty meals at these Atal Canteens in Delhi. Reportedly, the government has already opened 45 Atal Canteens spread across several locations, including RK Puram, Jangpura, Shalimar Bagh, Greater Kailash, Rajouri Garden, Narela, Bawana, Badli, Adarsh Nagar, Wazirpur and Mangolpuri.

Some Atal canteens have also opened up in Timarpur, Madipur, Shakur Basti, Rajinder Nagar, Matiala, Najafgarh, Mehrauli, Chhatarpur, Palam, Sangam Vihar, Malviya Nagar, Shahdara, and Rohtas Nagar. The authorities are planning to open 55 more Atal Canteens in the future. These canteens will serve lunch between 11 am and 4 pm, and dinner from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Delhi’s CM Rekha Gupta also shared this news on her official X account.

Thali Meals To Be Served Through Digital Token System

According to a report by NDTV, these canteens are expected to serve around 500 people daily on a first-come, first-served basis. The meals will be served in a thali and will include home-like, healthy food. Each meal will include dal, rice, chapati, a seasonal vegetable, and pickle. Wholesome, affordable, balanced, and healthy. This initiative is definitely worth praising.

Reportedly, the Delhi government has introduced a digital token system to distribute these meals. There will be no manual coupons. Moreover, CCTV cameras will monitor all centres in real time. Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), a government agency responsible for slum management and the welfare of the urban poor, is opening these canteens across the city.
