The Delhi government is planning to revamp the spaces beneath the city’s flyovers. The Public Works Department (PWD) is planning to open play areas, gyms, libraries, and even car cleaning services under them. The preliminary work has already started. Here’s what we know so far.
PWD’s Plan For Public Spaces Under Delhi Flyovers
In a move to develop the under-utilised public spaces, the Public Works Department (PWD) of the Delhi government is planning a complete revamp of the open spaces beneath the flyovers. As per a report by The New Indian Express, officials have identified 94 flyovers across the city where they could develop public amenities.
According to the plan, these amenities will include play areas, gyms, public libraries, and more. The Delhi government is planning to revamp these structures under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The initiative is called “Adopt a Flyover.” Additionally, the department is also exploring the option of setting up car cleaning services beneath the flyovers. This will allow the companies to earn revenue while also maintaining the site. As per the report by The Week, some of the longest flyovers identified include those at Africa Avenue, Chirag Delhi, IIT, Moti Bagh, Punjabi Bagh, and more.

Beautification Through Paintings And Art
As per the same report, PWD has already started preliminary work to transform these aged and neglected flyovers. Moreover, each flyover space might feature a themed design. PWD has floated tenders to appoint consultancy services for the project. Once selected, preparation of a detailed design, evaluation, and analysis of the proposed sites will take place.
After the plan and detailed project are prepared, the department will invite bids from private companies that will work on the beautification and maintenance of these public spaces. Reportedly, beautification through paintings and street art on flyover pillars and walls will also be carried out under this initiative.

Apart from putting these unused public spaces to good use, this initiative will also help maintain the areas under the flyovers, which are often found in poor condition. Plus, it will also present the city in a positive light. Imagine a public library and a play area under a flyover. Sounds good, right?
