Delhi-NCR was shaken by earthquake tremors on Tuesday night, October 6, after a 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. Earthquake Tremors Felt Across Delhi-NCR

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at around 10:15 PM, with its epicentre in Chamoli, Uttarakhand. The quake was recorded at a depth of 13 kilometres.

The tremors were reported from several parts of Delhi and NCR shortly after the earthquake. Residents also reported feeling the shaking in other parts of northern India, including Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.

Several people took to social media to describe the experience, with some reporting that furniture and buildings appeared to shake. Videos and posts also showed residents gathering outside their homes and in open areas following the tremors.

According to India Today, the earthquake was initially reported as measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale, but the NCS later put the magnitude at 4.9.

Where Was The Earthquake’s Epicentre?

The epicentre of Tuesday night’s earthquake was in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, at a depth of 13 kilometres. The region is part of the seismically active Himalayan belt, where earthquakes are not uncommon.

While the epicentre was not in Delhi, the tremors travelled across northern India and were strong enough to be felt in the capital and neighbouring NCR cities.

As of the latest reports, there were no reports of casualties or major damage following the earthquake. The 4.9-magnitude quake was classified as a light earthquake by India Today.

The tremors, however, were enough to cause concern among residents, particularly those living in high-rise buildings across Delhi-NCR.
