The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train, India’s first high-speed rail project, is all set to begin phased passenger operations from August 15, 2027. You would like to know that the bullet train corridor will be equipped with early earthquake detection seismometers. Here’s why.

The bullet train project will introduce Japanese Shinkansen technology to Indian Railways and help cut travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Indians have been excited about the train since it was announced, and now it is all set to become a reality. According to The Times of India, electrification works have started on the 508-km bullet train corridor along with civil construction.

Not just that, but the entire stretch will also be equipped with early earthquake detection seismometers. Each of the 14 traction substations will have these seismometers. But why? According to the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited, this technology will initiate protective actions within seconds to stop trains immediately in case of an earthquake. This will help improve passenger safety.

Bullet Train Corridor To Have An Advanced Electrification System 

According to The Times of India, a total of 28 seismometers are being installed. Out of these, 16 will be in Gujarat and 12 in Maharashtra. Furthermore, the bullet train corridor is also being equipped with an advanced overhead traction system. It is an electrification technology used globally for high-speed rail. This technology is being introduced in India for the very first time.

Reportedly, this system is specifically designed to provide a stable and uninterrupted power supply required for trains operating at speeds of up to 320 kmph. Electricity will flow from the national power grid to specially designed grid substations and then to 14 traction substations located along the corridor. This will ensure that the bullet train moves seamlessly from one section to another. The substations will also provide electricity for stations, signalling systems and maintenance facilities.
