The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is now refurbishing 130 escalators that have completed 15 years of service. The work will be carried out in a phased manner and aims to improve passenger convenience and experience during their commute. Work on escalators at several stations is already complete. Here’s more on this.
Delhi Metro To Overhaul 130 Escalators
These escalators reportedly have a design life of 30 years. But the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has started overhaul work on these after just 15 years of service. According to a report by The Times of India, the work on the 130 escalators will be carried out in a phased manner. These escalators follow stringent international standards, including those of the London Underground, Tokyo Metro and Singapore MRT, when it comes to maintenance.
Work on escalators at stations like Akshardham, Mayur Vihar Phase I, Mayur Vihar Extension, New Ashok Nagar, and Noida Sector 15 on the Blue Line has already been completed by the authorities. DMRC aims to enhance the overall passenger experience and safety. They also want to improve the escalators’ performance and reduce the chances of sudden breakdowns. The overhaul will extend the service life of these escalators so they can last up to 30 years.

Mid-Life Refurbishing To Be Done In Phases
According to a report by The Times of India, mid-life overhauling involves extensive inspection of an escalator, dismantling its major components, and replacing step chains, axles, profiles, floor plates and rollers. To minimise inconvenience for commuters, the overhauling is planned in phases.
Authorities will work on only one escalator at a station at a time. Moreover, commuters will be informed about this through temporary hoardings and signage at stations. Delhi Metro users will have to use lifts, staircases and parallel escalators for the time being. After these 130 escalators, DMRC also plans to start work on those installed during Delhi Metro’s Phase I and II expansions.
