If you own an electric vehicle in Maharashtra, here’s some great news! The state government has announced that from August 22, 2025, all electric vehicles (EVs) will no longer have to pay tolls on three of the busiest and most important expressways: the Atal Setu, the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, and the Samruddhi Mahamarg that connects Mumbai to Nagpur.

Electric Vehicles Ride Toll-Free On Major Maharashtra Expressways

In accordance with the Motor Vehicles Taxation Act of 1958, it’s a landmark decision aimed at encouraging more people to switch to environmentally friendly vehicles. Along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis approved the action. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced the change and explained how it ties into Maharashtra’s vision for sustainable transport.

The toll waiver isn’t limited to just personal electric cars. According to CNBC TV18, all types of EVs are covered, including privately owned four-wheelers, buses operated by State Transport Undertakings (STUs), private buses, and fleets of commercial EVs. Whether you are driving your own EV or operating a fleet, you will now be able to travel toll-free on these major highways.

Anyone who regularly drives on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway or the Samruddhi Mahamarg knows how much toll fees can add up. For electric bus operators or companies running EV fleets, the cost savings will be even higher.

As reported by CNBC TV18, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik believes, “By waiving tolls for electric vehicles, we are not only supporting EV owners but also taking a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and promoting a cleaner environment.”

More people might finally think about moving from petrol and diesel to electric vehicles once the no-toll policy for EVs is implemented. The lowered cost of travelling is a significant incentive that will undoubtedly increase the appeal of green mobility for everyone. Maharashtra is well on its way to becoming more EV-friendly, which could lead to more money being allocated to green technologies, batteries, and charging infrastructure.

This decision to eliminate tolls on three particular routes by the state government will make sure that the greatest number of people benefit from it. Maharashtra is leading the way in India’s greener transportation by providing genuine incentives to EV owners.
