Heavy rain recently lashed a stretch of Ganga Expressway in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, turning the area into a temporary pond where locals were seen catching fish with nets. The viral videos of the incident have sparked a debate online regarding infrastructure damage and rain preparedness in the country. Here’s why it’s such a big deal.

Ganga Expressway Turns Into A Fishing Spot After Heavy Rain

The Ganga Expressway is a 594-kilometre-long, six-lane greenfield expressway in Uttar Pradesh. It connects Meerut to Prayagraj and was built at a whopping cost of around ₹36,230 crore. According to News18, non-stop rain over 48 hours in Uttar Pradesh waterlogged one stretch of the expressway in Unnao.

This led locals to come together with fishing nets around the toll gate and catch fish. Videos of the incident are going viral online, and people are now questioning the expressway’s infrastructure, the drainage system, and the authorities. A user @Control_Krishna posted one video and wrote, “This can happen only in India. People are literally catching fish on an EXPRESSWAY.”

Waterlogging Sparks Reactions Online

Naturally, the video prompted reactions from people. One user even joked that soon the expressway will start charging passengers for buying fishing rods and nets for ₹500 per hour. Another user joked, “Pay toll and take one fish home.” 

Another user made a sarcastic comment and wrote, “Don’t think of it as a road—this is a combo pack of road, water park, and fish farming all in one budget. Pay the toll, cast your net, and take fresh fish home.” One comment also read, “The expressway now comes with a fishing facility.” 

Some users were even angry and wrote that this situation is “unbelievable.” They questioned the expressway’s high cost and infrastructure, since it hasn’t even been a year since its inauguration in April 2026.
