Every day, a new claim or trend takes over the internet, making us question everything we know about the world we live in! We recently came across one that claims bananas are fireproof. Now, before we made any claims ourselves, we did our due diligence and found out… well, scroll on to find out!

So, Are Bananas Fireproof?

If you’ve come across videos where content creators blast an unpeeled banana with flames reaching temperatures of thousands of degrees Celsius, only to peel it moments later and reveal a perfectly normal-looking fruit inside, you’re not alone. We were intrigued too! So, we decided to find out what’s really happening.

It has to be noted that in all these experiments, the flame is directed at the banana peel, not the fruit itself. That’s because the peel is what offers the protection. So, while bananas aren’t actually fireproof, their thick peel has impressive fire-resistant properties that help shield the fruit from brief exposure to intense heat.

Here’s All You Need To Know About This

According to reports, bananas aren’t completely fireproof, but they do have impressive fire-resistant properties. The reason? Both the fruit and its peel are made up of around 75% to 85% water, along with fibrous cellulose.

When exposed to intense heat, the water absorbs much of the heat energy and turns into steam, helping protect the fruit inside. At the same time, the peel quickly chars and forms a protective layer, slowing down the heat from reaching the banana.

Interestingly, it’s not just the fruit that’s useful. Banana plants are also packed with water, making them naturally resistant to catching fire. In fact, researchers have suggested they could be used as natural firebreaks to help slow the spread of wildfires. Scientists are even exploring ways to use banana peels and sap to create eco-friendly flame-retardant coatings and fabrics.
