Guwahati has always been known as the city that lives by the Brahmaputra. On Friday, that connection grew even stronger as Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated two of the most ambitious urban projects Assam has seen in recent years: the Brahmaputra Riverfront–Sati Radhika Shaanti Udyan and the Gateway of Guwahati Terminal & Jetty.

FM Sitharaman Opens Guwahati’s Grand Brahmaputra Riverfront & Gateway Terminal

Together worth a whopping ₹632 crore, these projects represent a new beginning for Guwahati. The event, which happened on the scenic banks of the Brahmaputra, was called a historic moment for Assam by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Built at MG Road at a cost of ₹305 crore, the Gateway of Guwahati (Terminal & Jetty) features the region’s first-ever all-weather floating terminal. As per the Assam Tribune reports, it is also equipped to handle four catamaran vessels, each carrying up to 100 passengers.

The terminal stretches across 6,800 square metres and comes with modern facilities, like a spacious terminal building, digital ticketing counters, a control and command centre for real-time monitoring, and floating jetties that rise and fall with the changing water levels. This means that even during the Brahmaputra’s unpredictable floods or dry spells, river traffic can continue smoothly, the Assam Tribune reported.

As Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma noted, it marks a new era in commerce, tourism, and regional integration, all part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Maritime India Vision 2030.

The Brahmaputra Riverfront–Sati Radhika Shaanti Udyan

A short distance away lies the second project: the Brahmaputra Riverfront–Sati Radhika Shaanti Udyan, developed at Uzanbazar for ₹327 crore. Spread over 1.2 kilometres from New DC Bungalow to Kachari Ghat, it’s a beautifully designed urban park that reimagines what a riverfront can be.

As per the Assam Tribune reports, this stunning space features a 15-metre-wide boulevard, landscaped gardens, cycling tracks, open-air gyms, and children’s play areas. There are also Assamese-themed gateways that celebrate the region’s culture while welcoming visitors into a relaxing riverside escape. Chief Minister Sarma said the project is not just about beautification but about reconnecting Guwahati’s people with the river.

With these two projects now open to the public, Guwahati is certainly turning into a model river city for India.
