A group of foreign nationals living in Gurugram on Sunday came together to organise a cleanliness drive to clean the city’s roads and drains. Their efforts left many citizens fuming, as they questioned the lack of action by authorities that forced these foreigners to step up and clean the streets themselves. Here’s more on it.
Foreigners Step In to Clean Dirty Gurugram Roads
On Sunday, several foreign nationals in Gurugram organised a special cleanliness drive to clean the city’s roads and drains. As per a report by Hindustan Times, the participants said that India is an amazing country, but its residents do not seem to care much about the surroundings of their homes. Lazar, a foreign national from Serbia who joined the drive, urged locals to take responsibility by cleaning at least a two-metre area outside their homes and shops.
However, the sight of foreigners sweeping the streets left many citizens upset, with some questioning the role of civic authorities. One X user, @TheSkinDoctor, criticised people for shamelessly littering the roads. He even posted a video of these foreigners cleaning the roads and the drains. Many netizens questioned the municipal authorities under the post for not doing their job. One user even wrote, “The public is not to blame. Where is the great municipality? Why aren’t they doing their jobs?”

They Have Been Part Of Clean-Up Drives Across India
According to the same report, Lazar shared with HT that the cleanliness drive in Gurugram started just 10 days ago. Before this, he had already been part of small clean-up efforts in different parts of India, including Tamil Nadu, Bengaluru, and Rishikesh.
Another foreign national, Matilda from France, also took part in the drive. She expressed her love for India but admitted feeling disappointed by the lack of cleanliness in Gurugram, where garbage is often seen strewn across the streets. Interestingly, this comes shortly after the Haryana Government, in July, emphasised its commitment to keeping Gurugram’s roads clean and drainage systems efficient. Yet, just weeks later, foreign nationals were seen holding brooms and cleaning the streets themselves.
