In recent turns of events, the Surat Food Safety Department took strict action against a food unit operating without a valid FSSAI licence. The department has seized adulterated paneer along with other materials from a godown in the city. The action showcases Gujarat’s commitment to protecting consumers from unsafe food products while assuring that only licensed food operators operate in the market. According to NDTV, authorities in Surat have seized a great quantity of adulterated paneer. The action was laid out by the Special Operation Group (SOG) along with officials from the Food Safety Department of the Surat Municipal Corporation. During the raid conducted on Thursday, the officials recovered 1,401 kg of adulterated paneer along with other related materials valued at about ₹28.44 lakh.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India shared a video of the raid on their official X account. Sharing the video, they wrote, “In a major crackdown on food adulteration, the Surat Food Safety Team conducted a decisive raid at a dairy establishment in Surat. A total of 1401 kg of paneer was seized during the drive.” In the video, we can see a large amount of paneer being kept in the godown in Surat.

Accused Admitted The Making Of Adulterated Paneer

According to the news portal, the raid was carried out after the police received information about the illegal activities at a location in Bhidbhanjan Society in the Pandesara area of Surat. After receiving the information, the police officials, along with the FSSAI, raided the premises, where they found a huge stock of ready-to-eat and partially processed paneer without any branding.

The Indian Express also reported that the paneer found during the raid was suspected to be fake and was sent for examination. After the approval from the FSSAI, the stock was confirmed to be analogue paneer. The godown was operated by Maheshkumar Sharma, a Rajasthani native who is currently living in Surat. Reports stated that the accused was selling the paneer to different dairies at a rate of ₹ 220 per kg. Upon questioning, the owner admitted that the paneer he had been producing was adulterated and that he had been running the business for the past two years.

Tips To Identify Fake Paneer

We have listed a few easy and simple tips to identify fake paneer at home so that you can stay safe from such hazardous experiences.

  • Press the paneer with your fingers. If it breaks easily, it is most likely real, but if it feels very rubbery, it may be fake.
  • Rub a small piece of paneer between your fingers. The real paneer crumbles while the fake one may feel sticky.
  • Put a small piece of paneer in hot water for some time. If the paneer becomes too hard or chewy, it is most likely to be a fake one.
  • The real paneer has a fresh milk smell, whereas the fake one may have a chemical or sour smell.
