Guys, the future of automobiles in India is bright! The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad recently rolled out driverless, AI-powered buses into daily service on its campus, marking a significant step toward smart mobility in India. These buses have been built by the institute’s Technology Innovation Hub on Autonomous Navigation (TiHAN), and here’s all you need to know about it.
India’s First Driverless, AI-Powered Buses At IIT Hyderabad
No matter how cool we tried to act, Taarzan: The Wonder Car impressed us all with its self-driving car concept. Now, 21 years after the film’s release, the idea of driverless vehicles has become a reality in India at IIT Hyderabad. According to India Today, IIT Hyderabad has launched driverless buses, powered by AI, on its campus recently. These vehicles are fully electric and operate without a human driver.
Led by Professor P Rajalakshmi, the TiHAN team has successfully developed and deployed these buses on the campus and has already transported over 10,000 passengers! As per its report, the passenger satisfaction rate is 90%. This is India’s first driverless vehicle and is likely to reshape the country’s mobility sector on a broader scale.

All You Need To Know About These Vehicles
These driverless, AI-powered buses by IIT Hyderabad’s TiHAN are available in six-seater and fourteen-seater electric variants. While it is still new, people on the campus seem to be loving these vehicles. India Today reported that these buses are fitted with Autonomous Emergency Braking and Adaptive Cruise Control systems. This means the vehicles can adjust speed, detect obstacles, and maintain safe distances–all by themselves.
Furthermore, it has reached Technology Readiness Level 9. In layman’s terms, it has proven itself in real-world conditions. The team also built India’s first autonomous navigation testbed, replicating Indian actual driving conditions. This is expected to help companies, researchers, and government bodies test and validate self-driving systems.
