Ganga Water Level Rises In Varanasi
The Ganga water level continued to rise rapidly in Varanasi on Monday, August 31. The river was flowing at around 69.40 metres. The warning level is 70.262 metres, while the danger mark is 71.26 metres. The rising water has raised concerns as it gets closer to the danger level.
All 84 ghats in Varanasi are now flooded. Several famous landmarks along the ghats are also underwater. The famous ‘Namaste’ statue at Namo Ghat is nearly submerged. Water has also entered several low-lying areas of Varanasi. The rising Ganga has affected the Varuna river too. On Sunday, the Ganga caused the Varuna to flow in the opposite direction, sending water into low-lying areas along its banks.

NDRF Team On Standby
The Ganga is rising by nearly 4 cm every hour, making the situation more serious. As a safety step, authorities have stopped boat operations for now. Officials are also keeping a close watch on the water level and preparing in case the flood situation gets worse. Authorities have now selected 61 places to turn into relief centres. These centres will offer shelter, food, drinking water, sanitation, lighting and medical help.
Moreover, the authorities have created 21 special monitoring points in areas where flooding is more likely. The administration has arranged 198 boats for rescue and relief work. Teams from the NDRF, Water Police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) are also ready to help if the flood situation gets worse.
