GMR Airports To Introduce Major Upgrade At Two Indian Airports

GMR Airports Ltd. is a competitor of Adani Group’s airport business. As per Business Standard, the company is now planning to invest $2 billion (₹19,400 crore) in two of its Indian airports, New Delhi and Hyderabad, over the next five to seven years. This investment is planned to manage the growing passenger traffic and modernise the infrastructure.

The company is planning to invest around ₹13,800 crore in Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad. The remaining ₹5,600 crore will be invested in the New Delhi airport. The money for these projects will come through loans and their own funds. The parent company, GMR Airports, will not pay for the projects directly.

How Will GMR’s Investment Upgrade Airports?

After completion of the expansion, Hyderabad Airport will have the capacity to handle around 80 million passengers every year. Currently, the airport handles 34 million passengers. GMR Airports is planning this major airport expansion because government estimates suggest that India’s air passenger traffic could grow nearly six times and reach around 1.1 billion passengers in the next 14 years.

The country’s commercial aircraft fleet is also expected to rise from around 400 planes in 2014 to more than 2,350 aircraft by 2040. GMR Airports is also discussing plans to invest in Nagpur Airport. The company is also planning to take part in bids for airport projects that the Indian government offers for sale.
