Watching a movie in theatres is always an amazing experience compared to watching it on TV. But while buying tickets, we often check the prices and sometimes choose a seat that costs a little less. However, movie enthusiasts in Karnataka may now have to think twice before buying movie tickets, as they are set to become more expensive from September. Scroll down to know more!

Movie Tickets To Get Costlier In Karnataka

From September 30, while buying movie tickets, you will have to pay an extra welfare cess of up to 2%. As per Moneycontrol report, the government first mentioned the cess in a September 24, 2025 notification under the Karnataka Cine and Cultural Activists (Welfare) Act. And as predicted, this decision did not receive a positive response. The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) said that this decision will make watching movies in theatres more expensive for people.

For example:

If the movie ticket is ₹250, the additional cess will be ₹5. Though it may not seem like much at first, the cost could become significant when counted over months and years. This move has been introduced at a time when the cinema industry is trying to make theatrical entertainment more accessible to viewers.

May Increase Tax Burden On Cinema Industry

Moneycontrol reported that according to MAI, theatres already pay 18% GST, which is often included in the movie ticket price. The additional cess will add to the overall cost and increase the burden on the cinema industry.

The labour commissioner had earlier sent notices to Karnataka theatres asking them to pay the cess. But the Karnataka High Court cancelled these notices because the government had not officially put the law into effect at that time. Later, the government officially notified the law and said it would come into effect from September 30.
