Heavy Rain Forces Closure Of Mussoorie-Dehradun Road; Hundreds Stranded

Mussoorie-Dehradun Road Shuts Down After Heavy Rains

According to The Times of India, the damage was observed early Monday morning, with parts of the road beginning to sink. Initially, officials allowed one-way traffic while inspecting the situation. However, as the cracks expanded and the road continued to subside, the district administration declared the stretch unsafe and suspended all vehicular movement.

Mussoorie Sub-Divisional Magistrate Rahul Anand stated that traffic has been stopped until further orders to ensure public safety. The road closure has left hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the damaged section, affecting commuters, tourists and residents. Officials have urged passengers to avoid the route until it is declared safe.

The Restoration Work To Reopen Is On

As per the reports, the Public Works Department (PWD) has initiated restoration work to reopen the road as quickly as possible. PWD Executive Engineer Rajesh Kumar told the portal that workers are expanding the road towards the hillside to create a more secure passage while simultaneously fixing and building up the damaged embankment. Authorities expect traffic to resume by Tuesday if repairs progress as planned.

Meanwhile, vehicular traffic has been shifted through the Kimadi route, which links Mussoorie and Dehradun. However, residents have expressed concerns, claiming that the narrow road is not designed to handle heavy traffic and has witnessed several accidents in the past. The road closure has also raised questions among Mussoorie’s tourism industry.

The Mussoorie-Dehradun road is the most popular travel route to the hill station and has suffered rain-related harm in previous monsoon seasons as well. With heavy rainfall continuing across Uttarakhand, authorities are closely monitoring prone stretches to prevent further disruptions.
