Heavy Rain In Guwahati Triggers Floods, One Dead; Authorities Issue Advisory

While many cities in India are struggling with intense heat, some are witnessing heavy rainfall. In Assam, continuous downpour has caused severe flooding, leading to one death in Guwahati. Here’s what happened and the advisory issued for residents.

One Person Dies Amid Severe Flooding In Guwahati

On Sunday evening, heavy rainfall triggered floods in several parts of Guwahati, Assam. The worst impact was seen in the Maligaon Chariali area, where a woman lost her life after falling into an uncovered drain. It was hidden beneath floodwater.

According to The Free Press Journal, the victim has been identified as Payal Nath. The incident took place at night, due to poor visibility and rising water levels, she accidentally stepped into an open manhole along a footpath.

Soon after she went missing, rescue teams from the Guwahati City Police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) began search operations. After more than four hours, two local youths found her unconscious about 150 metres away from the spot where she had fallen. She was pulled out of the drain and rushed to a hospital. However, doctors declared her dead.

Advisory Issued For Guwahati Residents

The heavy rainfall in Guwahati has forced authorities to take strict action. The district administration has ordered all government and private educational institutions in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) area to remain closed. Officials have advised people to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

The Kamrup Metropolitan District Administration has issued a high alert due to the worsening situation. Officials warned that continued rainfall could lead to landslides and flooding, especially in low-lying and vulnerable areas. 

The administration urged residents to remain alert and follow safety instructions. Authorities stressed that people should step out only in emergencies.

To handle any crisis, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has activated its emergency response system. The District Emergency Operations Centre is on standby to provide immediate help. Residents can contact the control room at 93654-29314 or use the toll-free number 1077 for assistance.
