IMD Issues Red Alert In Delhi Amid Heavy Rainfall

According to reports by India Today, a western disturbance has impacted weather conditions across northern India, bringing severe thunderstorms and rainfall to several parts of the region. The IMD’s red alert warned of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph and heavy rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour until 9 am.

An orange alert was also notified for Faridabad, Gurugram, Rohtak and Sonipat in Haryana, along with nine districts in Uttar Pradesh. These areas were warned of thunderstorms, lightning, winds gusting at 40–60 kmph and moderate to intense rainfall.

Despite the adverse weather conditions, Delhi Airport confirmed that flight operations were continuing normally. In a post on X, the airport said its ground teams were coordinating with all stakeholders to minimise disruptions and ensure a smooth journey for passengers. Travellers were urged to contact their respective airlines for the latest flight updates.

The rainfall brought some relief from the recent warm weather, with cloudy skies and showers causing temperatures to drop by 1–2 degrees Celsius. However, the intense spell also caused disruption across parts of the capital. Roads near Jhandewalan Temple in Karol Bagh were left waterlogged, while other parts of Delhi reported uprooted trees and flooding.

Waterlogging And Traffic Delays In Delhi

The weather department cautioned commuters about possible traffic delays, an increased risk of road accidents and water accumulation on roads and in low-lying areas following the downpour.

The IMD advised people to check traffic conditions before leaving home, follow official traffic advisories and avoid roads that are prone to waterlogging. Despite Monday’s rain, daytime temperatures in Delhi are expected to remain between 31 and 35 degrees Celsius over the next few days. According to the IMD’s seven-day forecast issued on Sunday evening, dry weather and partly cloudy skies are expected from Tuesday to Saturday.
