Heavy Rain Triggers Orange Alert In Himachal Pradesh; 224 Dead, Over 300 Roads Blocked

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert weather warning for Himachal Pradesh till Thursday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in isolated areas from August 11 to August 14. Himachal Pradesh is already grappling with widespread damage, road blockages, and a rising death toll. Here are the latest updates. 

IMD Issues Orange Alert For Himachal Pradesh

This year’s monsoon has not been easy on Himachal Pradesh. The IMD has now issued an orange alert for the next four days, which means the state will have to brace for more rainfall. As per a report by India TV, districts like Kangra, Murari Devi, and Palampur have been experiencing continuous downpour since Saturday night. The orange warning, which will remain in place till August 14, signals the possibility of landslides, power outages, waterlogging, and travel disruptions. X user @InfoR00M, also posted an update showing the aftermath of the destruction. 

Reportedly, monsoon rains across Himachal Pradesh have claimed a total of 224 lives. Landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, and drowning have claimed 116 lives, while road accidents have caused 108 fatalities since June 20. Several people are reported to be missing. The widespread damage has also been severe, with a loss of nearly ₹1,988 crores!

Road Closures And Infrastructure Damage

As per the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), 360 roads still remain blocked, including the Aut-Sainj road on NH-305. The worst-hit areas are Mandi district, with 212 road closures, and Kullu, with 92 road closures.

The flash floods, cloudbursts, and continuous downpour have also caused infrastructure damage. This includes 132 damaged power transformers and 520 disrupted water supply schemes, which have severely impacted the daily life of residents in Himachal Pradesh. Rescue, relief, and restoration work are ongoing across affected areas.

Authorities have urged residents to strictly follow rainfall advisories and avoid landslide-prone roads. They have also advised people to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
