Located on the Mundeshwari Hills, the famous Mundeshwari Temple in Bihar is believed to be the world’s oldest Hindu temple. It has been an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)-protected monument since 1915, and now Bihar is planning to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to restore and reconstruct the shrine. Here’s how AI can help.
Bihar Plans To Restore Mundeshwari Temple Using AI
The Mundeshwari Temple is located in the Mundeshwari Hills in Kaimur, Bihar. Dedicated to Maa Durga and Lord Shiva, it is believed to be the oldest functional Hindu temple in the world, dating back to 108 CE. It is an important ancient site, and this is why Bihar is considering reconstructing and restoring it, but using AI.
According to The Times of India, the state government has launched a scientific process to find out whether the scattered architectural remains around the ancient Mundeshwari Temple can help reconstruct the shrine’s original form. The responsibility lies with the Bihar Heritage Development Society (BHDS), which will collect the undocumented debris and document it using modern technology.

How AI Will Help Reconstruct The Ancient Temple?
According to ETV Bharat, the architectural remains on Mundeshwari Hill include huge pillars and stone blocks with carvings that may have been part of the temple’s walls, ceilings and shikhara. Authorities are recording their three-dimensional measurements. Reportedly, BHDS started gathering and documenting these architectural remains only after receiving approval from the ASI, which protects and maintains the temple.
After the measurements are complete, the authorities will use AI to shape and reconstruct the temple’s design to which the fragments once belonged. Further reconstruction work will follow. History lovers will be keen to know that the remains seem to belong to a North Indian Nagara-style temple, as they include a raised stone platform, a sanctum sanctorum topped by shikharas (towers), mandapas (assembly halls) and amalakas (circular stone discs) to cap the shikharas.
