Telangana has moved a step ahead in its expansion for high-speed train, with Hyderabad merging as the main point of an ambitious network proposed to connect major cities across western and southern India. Read on to know more about the development.
Telangana High Speed Train Project
As per a report by News18, at a high-level meeting held at the Secretariat, Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy stated that the proposed Hyderabad-Pune-Mumbai high-speed rail network has reached an important milestone, with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) now completed. The minister called the project a potential game-changer and stated that the corridor could reduce travel time between Hyderabad and Mumbai to three hours while opening new routes for trade and economic growth.

The proposed corridor will stretch about 761 km and is being built for trains capable of operating at speeds of 320-330 km/h. The route is likely to include around 10 to 12 stations, with a mix of elevated, ground-level and underground sections. As per reports, as part of the alignment, a tunnel of roughly 4-5 km has also been proposed near Vikarabad. If executed as planned, the stretch would be one of India’s most important high-speed rail projects apart from the Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train network.
The Proposed Cost Of The Project
The proposed DPR is estimated at around ₹2 lakh crore, as it is being compared with other high-speed rail projects in place. However, the final project cost will be determined after approvals, funding arrangements and further technical assessments are completed. With the DPR now completed, the focus is towards approvals from the Centre and other stakeholders. If everything goes as planned, construction could begin by the end of 2027 or early 2028. The timeline is estimated for around six to eight years.
Apart from faster commuter movement, the project is also being highlighted as an economic growth catalyst. As per officials, they believe the corridor could support trade flows, reduce travel time for business movement and strengthen industrial development along the route. As per News18, Minister of Roads and Buildings of Telangana, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, informed that Hyderabad’s strategic location positions it as a connector between multiple regions and high-speed rail.
