For the new study, the researchers took into account selfie-related incidents that either killed or injured people between March 2014 and May 2025. They collected reports published on Google News to understand the total number of deaths and injuries caused by selfies. Comparing the data online, they found India has reported 42.1% of total selfie-related incidents in the world, which makes the country a global leader in such cases.

In India, it was seen that many people have easy access to risky locations, such as train tracks, cliffs, rivers, and high-rise buildings. And just to take a selfie and post it on social media, they are ready to take high risks. In this, the country’s large population also plays a crucial role. As the population grows, such incidents also rise.

The major incidents are caused by slipping from the cliffs, getting hit by a train or drowning in water while trying to take a photo. The idea behind the study is to warn people to be more aware and not risk their lives just to take a perfect selfie.
