High fuel costs are causing major problems for Indian airlines, as fuel makes up about 40-45% of their total expenses. After trying every possible way to cut down fuel use, IndiGo is now planning to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help save costs. Here’s how AI can help.
IndiGo Turns To AI To Cut Fuel Costs
Seems like Indian airlines have found a new way to use Artificial Intelligence, or AI. According to The Times of India, due to rising jet fuel costs, many Indian airlines are trying to find new ways to cut expenses, and now IndiGo is all set to try a new method. Instead of taking off at constant speeds, pilots are now being advised to use the ‘OptiClimb Solution’, an AI-powered flight optimisation solution that helps pilots reduce fuel burn and carbon emissions during the energy-intensive climb phase of a flight.
Reportedly, instead of taking off at constant speeds, the airline has advised pilots to fly at varying speeds wherever possible. IndiGo expects to save 60-65 kg of fuel per take-off using this AI solution. Lower fuel burn will also result in lower emissions. The system is still in its trial phase. However, if it turns out to be successful, the airline will make it a regular feature across its Airbus fleet.

AI Tool Aims To Improve Fuel Efficiency
According to The Times of India, IndiGo has been closely working with SITA, the world’s leading flight operation solutions provider, on the implementation of this AI tool. The primary aim of OptiClimb is not just to cut fuel usage but also to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint.
However, this AI system will work with full adherence to Air Traffic Control (ATC) requirements and safe operating practices. If the trial becomes successful, it is possible that many Indian airlines will choose to implement this system in flight operations because fuel costs are rising and airlines are finding it challenging to keep up with these expenses.
