India’s First Hydrogen Train Completes Final High-Speed Trial

According to reports by News18, the hydrogen-powered train completed its final trial run between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana, marking a major milestone in Indian Railways’ push towards safer and greener transportation. The train reached a maximum speed of 120 kmph, while railway authorities closely monitored its performance throughout the test.

The footage released from the trial showed the train leaving from Jind, with the successful run preparing the way for its eventual passenger-only operations after completing the remaining regulatory approvals and operational formalities.

Dedicated Hydrogen Infrastructure Built At Jind

The Jind-Sonipat track was selected as the pilot lane because it offers optimal settings for testing hydrogen-powered technology under real operating circumstances. To promote the project, Indian Railways has also set up particular hydrogen production, storage and refuelling amenities at Jind.

The train has been fitted with multiple safety features, including hydrogen leak detectors, flame detection systems and continuous monitoring technology to guarantee safe operations.

Operated by hydrogen fuel-cell technology, the train generates electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, releasing only water vapour as a by-product. Apart from reducing carbon emission levels, the technology also helps to lower air and noise pollutants, in contrast to traditional diesel-powered trains.

With the effective completion of the final 120 kmph trial, India has taken a significant step towards introducing hydrogen-powered passenger trains and has become part of a select group of countries developing cleaner, more sustainable railway transportation.
