India is set to take a major step towards environmentally friendly rail transport with the launch of its first hydrogen-powered train, scheduled to depart from Jind, Haryana, on July 17. Designed by Indian Railways, the project marks the country’s first step into hydrogen-powered mobility while promoting its larger goal of reducing carbon emissions. Here are five key things to know about the soon-to-be-launched hydrogen rail.
5 Key Things About India’s First Hydrogen Railway
1. It Will Run On The Jind-Sonipat Route
India’s first hydrogen-powered train will run on the 90-kilometre broad-gauge route between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. Set up under the specifications of the Research, Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO), the scheme places India among a select group of countries using hydrogen-powered rail technology.
2. It Is The World’s Longest Hydrogen Train On Broad Gauge
The train features a 10-coach configuration, consisting of two driving power cars rated at 1,200 kW each and eight passenger coaches, giving it a total overall power output of 2,400 kW. During its testing phase, the Railway Board has approved a maximum operating speed of 75 km/h on the route.

3. It Produces Zero Carbon Emissions
The train uses a hybrid propulsion system that combines hydrogen fuel cells with lithium-ion batteries instead of diesel. The only by-products generated during operation are water vapour and steam, which makes it a cleaner choice for rail transport. According to project estimates, one kilogram of hydrogen produces energy equal to around 4.5 litres of diesel, while a full 180-kilometre round trip will use approximately 360 kilograms of hydrogen.
4. Jind Has A Dedicated Hydrogen Refuelling Facility
To support daily operations, a hydrogen production and refuelling plant has been built at Jind Junction at an estimated cost of ₹120 crore. Located across nearly 2,000 square metres, the facility can store up to 3,000 kilograms of hydrogen underground and also includes rainwater harvesting to partially meet its essential water requirements.
5. The Launch Is Part Of A Larger Infrastructure Push
Alongside the hydrogen train, several major infrastructure projects are scheduled to be inaugurated or have their foundation stones laid during the Prime Minister’s Haryana visit. These include new highways, railway upgrades, two medical colleges in Bhiwani and Narnaul, and a modern Sikh Museum in Kurukshetra, making the visit significant for both green mobility and regional development.
