Air travel is often expensive for travellers. It can be really frustrating to see flight fares go beyond our expectations, especially during the festive season. One of the reasons behind these high flight fares is the rising fuel prices. Now, IndiGo has announced an updated fuel surcharge on both domestic and international flights. Read on to know about the additional charge on IndiGo fares!
IndiGo Increases Fuel Surcharge On Flight Fares
IndiGo is all set to add the new fuel surcharges to new flight bookings made from 12:01 AM on October 6, 2026. The airline has announced the updated charges because of a sharp rise in the price of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF). The rise in fuel prices is due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
As per The New Indian Express report, the fuel charge on your domestic flight fare will depend on how long you’re flying.
- Less than 500 km: ₹425 extra
- 501–1,000 km: ₹600 extra
- 1,001–1,500 km: ₹900 extra
- 1,501–2,000 km: ₹1,150 extra
- More than 2,000 km: ₹1,300 extra

What Is The Additional Charge On International Ticket Fares?
International passengers will also have to pay an additional surcharge based on their destination:
- SAARC routes within 500 km: ₹500
- SAARC routes above 500 km: ₹1,000
- South East Asia, Middle East & GCC, North & East Asia: ₹5,500
- Africa: ₹6,000
- Europe: ₹10,000
ATF is a major cost for airlines and can make up 40% of their total operating costs. IndiGo said the recent rise in ATF prices has made flying more expensive. The price of domestic ATF was ₹115 per litre in June, ₹110 in July, ₹115 in August, ₹121 on September 1, and further increased to ₹137 per litre from October 1. The airline said it understands that the new surcharge will be an extra cost for travellers and apologised for the additional burden.
