Is Mumbai’s CSMT Leaking? Heavy Rainfall Puts UNESCO Landmark At Risk

Days of continuous monsoon rainfall in Mumbai have now caused significant leaks in the central dome of the UNESCO-listed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). Authorities have now barricaded the foyer beneath the dome and are doing their best to restore the structure. Here’s what we know so far.

Heavy Rain In Mumbai Causes Leaks In CSMT Structure

Located in the heart of South Mumbai, Maharashtra, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) is a historic railway station. Not just that, but this architectural masterpiece is also a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. But the rain in the city has now impacted its iconic dome. According to Mid-Day, the dome has developed major leaks, forcing the authorities to barricade the portion of the foyer beneath it.

The area has been covered with rags and floor cloths to absorb the leaking water. Access has now been restricted until the leakage stops. Reportedly, Central Railway has confirmed that the dome is already undergoing a scientific restoration programme. This means the officials are working to prevent further damage to the city’s iconic structure.

Restoration Work Underway

Since the restoration programme is underway, people should rest assured that the CSMT will remain safe. The monsoon in Mumbai has been a little harsh this year. Four days of incessant rainfall have not just disrupted daily life but have also caused waterlogged roads and traffic snarls across the city.

Bad weather in Maharashtra has not just impacted Mumbai but also the surrounding regions, causing severe damage and major infrastructure disruptions. Flights are being cancelled and delayed, and the city has also reported over 1,000 tree and branch collapses. People are being advised not to step out unnecessarily and to stay extra cautious while travelling during the rains.
