In India, we’ve often seen places getting renamed, like recently Kerala became “Keralam”. Now, guess what? The next possible change could be for India’s capital, New Delhi and West Bengal. Yes, you read that right! Authorities have proposed renaming Delhi and West Bengal. Scroll down to know!
MP Proposes Renaming Delhi As Indraprastha
Chandni Chowk MP Praveen Khandelwal has suggested that Delhi should be renamed Indraprastha. Why so? As per NDTV, he believes it connects the city to its ancient history. In his letter to the Home Minister, he said India is one of the world’s oldest civilisations, so the capital’s name should also reflect its rich past. He feels Indraprastha was the original name and identity of the city.
A Chandni Chowk MP has proposed renaming India’s capital, New Delhi, to better reflect its cultural and historical roots. The suggestion has sparked fresh discussions around heritage and historical connections.
He also mentioned that old historical stories, including the Mahabharata, say that the Pandavas once made Indraprastha their capital, which is believed to be present-day Delhi. He added that the name Delhi came much later during the medieval era, when different rulers and cultures influenced the city’s identity over time.

Will West Bengal Become Bangla?
Also, it’s not just New Delhi that’s in discussion for a new name. As per Deccan Herald, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has once again requested that the state’s name be changed to Bangla. Her renewed demand comes after the Union Cabinet approved Kerala’s proposal to officially use “Keralam.” She had raised this issue earlier, too, but the Centre had rejected the request.
Along with suggesting a name change, Khandelwal also made another cultural proposal. He asked authorities to think about installing statues of the Pandavas at a suitable place in Delhi, and he suggested Purana Qila as a possible spot. He believes this would help people reconnect with the city’s ancient history and legendary stories while celebrating its cultural roots in a meaningful way.
In a separate letter, he also wrote to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. He requested that the Delhi Assembly pass a resolution supporting the idea of renaming Delhi to Indraprastha.
