Nestled on hills near Bhubaneswar, Khandagiri and Udayagiri are ancient rock-cut caves in Odisha. These caves are believed to have been built in the 2nd Century BC. Due to their age, the structures have experienced significant wear and deterioration over time. Now, after years of neglect, this historical place is finally all set for a makeover. The Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) has taken steps to restore and beautify this heritage site. Read to know more details.
Khandagiri And Udayagiri In Odisha To Get A Makeover
The OTDC has taken an initiative to revive the beauty of two ancient caves—Khandagiri and Udayagiri in Odisha. For the site’s development, OTDC has submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the National Monument Authority (NMA), reported My City Links. This new plan focuses on protecting the heritage while improving tourism. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) will review the DPR to make sure the historical monuments stay safe during redevelopment. The revamp work will begin after NMA approval.
Once the redevelopment is completed, Khandagiri and Udayagiri are expected to emerge as prominent heritage sites to visit in Odisha. With better facilities, pathways, and cultural spaces, the heritage site is about to get a fresh new look.
What Changes Are Planned For The Site
This project report includes better roads, making it easy to reach the twin hills, a pathway linking important monuments, and upgraded facilities. The plan also includes an information centre, a cafeteria, rest areas, and an amphitheatre for cultural events. The Odisha project also focuses on accessibility, with walking paths and for the differently abled, it will have electric vehicle access. The authorities are also planning to improve the landscapes around, and 450 medicinal plant species in the area will be preserved.
According to My City Link, to manage the crowd, separate entry routes will be planned for both the Jain temple and the Barabhuja temple. A new open ground will be created for tourism and cultural festivals. Modern parking zones for buses, cars, and two-wheelers will also be built to make access easier and more organised.
