8 Killed As Heavy Rain Triggers Landslides And Floods Across Kerala

Extreme Rainfall Kills 8 People In Kerala

As per a report by NDTV, Kottayam district came out as one of the worst-affected regions, causing the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall. Heavy overnight showers flooded towns, submerged roads and forced hundreds of residents to move to safer locations. Additionally, a landslide in Poonjar claimed the life of Josephin Johny Manappattu, while rescue teams continue searching for his wife, Regina, who remains missing.

Erattupetta municipality witnessed severe flooding, with residents saying water levels surpassed those seen during the devastating 2018 Kerala floods. Fire and Rescue Services, along with local volunteers, evacuated people stranded inside flooded homes as traffic came to a standstill.

Landslide Reported From Kokkayar & Kottickal Amid Heavy Rain

Floodwaters also affected Koottickal, Mundakkayam, Kanjirappally, Erumeli, Parathode and Manimala after rivers, including the Manimala and Pullakayar, overflowed. Several causeways went underwater, disrupting transport and flooding homes, shops and roads. Fresh landslides were reported from Kokkayar and Koottickal, while nearly 30 acres of land were washed away at Theekkoy, destroying four houses.

Chief Minister V.D. Satheeshan reviewed the situation with senior officials and district administrations as evacuation efforts intensified. Six relief camps have been opened in Kottayam, with more on standby if required. Authorities have activated 24-hour control rooms and urged residents living near rivers and in landslide-prone areas to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel and shift to safer locations whenever instructed.
