Ladakh Bans Single-Use Plastics, Littering; Imposes Fines Of Up To ₹10,000 For Violations

One of the most disheartening sights while travelling is seeing pristine landscapes covered in garbage and plastic waste left behind near rivers, forests, and popular tourist spots. In a bid to protect its fragile ecosystem and preserve its natural beauty, Ladakh has launched a strict crackdown on littering and single-use plastics. The Union Territory has announced a ban on single-use plastic items and introduced hefty penalties for those found violating the rules.

Ladakh Bans Single-Use Plastics & Littering

According to NDTV, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena announced a ban on single-use plastics across Ladakh. As per the announcement, using, selling or stocking single-use plastic items and littering in public places will now attract massive penalties in the Union Territory.

Seen as a major step towards protecting Ladakh’s fragile ecology and natural landscapes, the ban will apply to individuals, commercial establishments, and institutions, including hotels and eateries. Authorities are also taking measures to ensure strict implementation of the rules. Random checks for single-use plastic items will be conducted at Leh Airport as well as other key entry points into Ladakh.

Huge Fine For Violations

Keeping the ecologically sensitive Himalayan region and the rising number of tourists in the region, the ban on single-use plastic in Ladakh has been deemed necessary. As per The New Indian Express, Ladakh has banned the use, sale, storage, stocking, distribution, transportation and supply of identified single-use plastic items. This includes everything from plastic cutlery, cups, plates to thermocol decorations and plastic banners below the prescribed thickness.

Violation of this could result in a fine of up to ₹10,000. Meanwhile, littering in public places will attract a fine of ₹5,000.
