Major Breakthrough Achieved At Zojila Tunnel, New Kashmir-Ladakh Route To Open By February 2028

Earlier, connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh was not available throughout the year. To ensure year-round access, the Zojila Tunnel is being built and is now moving closer to completion. Read on to know more!

Zojila Tunnel Achieves Major Breakthrough, Moves Closer To Completion

On Tuesday, June 9, the Zojila Tunnel project recorded a major breakthrough. How? As per Free Press Journal, engineers successfully completed the final 2.5-metre stretch inside the tunnel. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari marked the milestone by remotely triggering the blast that connected the final remaining section of the tunnel near Minimarg in Ladakh.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah were also present to witness the important occasion. This moment was a major milestone because, once completed, the tunnel will make travel between Kashmir and Ladakh possible throughout the year, even during harsh winters.

Six Months Ahead Of Schedule

You know what’s exciting? According to Free Press Journal, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) revealed that the breakthrough came nearly six months ahead of schedule. With this achievement, around 85% of the overall project has already been completed.

The tunnel project connecting Kashmir and Ladakh is expected to be completed and opened for public use in February 2028. It’s because, though the breakthrough has been achieved, civil construction work will continue for another seven to eight months. After that, electrical and other finishing works will begin.

The Zojila Tunnel is a 13.153-kilometre-long single-tube road tunnel being built at an altitude of around 11,578 feet. Once completed, it will become the world’s longest bi-directional road tunnel at such a height. The project connects Baltal in Kashmir with Minimarg in Ladakh.
