The Ladakh administration is currently exploring the idea of a single permit for foreign travellers to streamline entry procedures and make visiting easier for tourists. Not just that, they are also considering setting up dedicated airport verification desks. Here’s what we know so far about this recent development.

Ladakh May Introduce Single Permit For Foreign Tourists

According to Telegraph India, the Union Territory may soon introduce a single Protected Area Permit (PAP) for foreign tourists, except for specifically restricted areas. This move aims to streamline entry procedures, make visiting more convenient for travellers and also take care of security requirements.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Ladakh Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra, which reviewed the existing framework governing PAP and Restricted Area Permits (RAPs) for foreign visitors. Not just that, the authorities are also considering establishing dedicated registration and verification desks for foreign nationals.

Facial Recognition & Self-Registration Facilities Coming Soon?

According to Telegraph India, the Ladakh administration believes that minimal checkpoints are now the need of the hour at the airport. A large number of checkpoints can cause delays and inconvenience to tourists. Moreover, the Leh Deputy Commissioner was also asked to examine the feasibility of introducing facial recognition technology along with self-registration facilities at designated places. This could help modernise permit verification and make the process more seamless.

It should be kept in mind that all these rules are under consideration and have not been implemented yet. The administration is still exploring these ideas, so foreign travellers should continue to follow the existing permit rules for now. If the proposed changes are implemented, visits for foreign tourists could become much easier.
