India To Get Its 1st Petroglyph Conservation Park In Leh With Rocks Depicting Ancient Carvings

A Petroglyph Conservation Park is a protected open-air archaeological space dedicated to safeguarding ancient rock carvings. The good news is that India is getting its first Petroglyph Conservation Park in Leh. Here’s everything you need to know about this project.

Leh Is Getting India’s First Petroglyph Conservation Park

India’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park will be developed at Sindhu Ghat in Leh, Ladakh. The work to preserve one of the nation’s oldest artistic legacies has already begun. According to News18, the project aims to safeguard and protect centuries-old and even millennia-old rock carvings that offer a rare glimpse into the region’s prehistoric past.

The work is currently underway, and 31 ancient petroglyphs have already been relocated and preserved at the site. You would like to know that the park will also serve as a dedicated conservation and interpretation centre. It will help protect these fragile archaeological treasures, and the best part is that more researchers, students and visitors will be able to access them more easily.

Ancient Petroglyphs Depict Hunting Scenes, Animals & More

Petroglyphs are prehistoric images, symbols and inscriptions that are directly carved into rocks using stone or metal tools. Unlike cave paintings, these images and symbols are engraved into stone, giving us a glimpse into early human civilisation. According to News18, Ladakh is home to one of South and Central Asia’s richest collections of rock art. Nearly 400 petroglyph sites are scattered across the region.

Many of these carvings depict hunting scenes, wild animals such as ibex and snow leopards, humans, trade routes, Buddhist motifs and more. You would also be interested to know that some inscriptions have been found in ancient languages, including Sanskrit, Chinese and Arabic.

The project is being implemented through a collaboration between the Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums, Ladakh Administration and the Archaeological Survey of India. The project is important because most of these petroglyphs are located in isolated areas along the Indus River and Zanskar River, where they face threats from road construction, weathering and climate-related changes.
