If spotting a snow leopard in the wild has been on your travel bucket list, Ladakh just gave you another reason to make that trip. Snow leopard tracking in the high-altitude region has been ranked among the world’s top wildlife experiences, securing the fourth spot on the Wildlife Experience Index.
Why Is Snow Leopard Tracking In Ladakh So Special?
The ranking, released by travel company Bailey Robinson, looked at 30 wildlife experiences from around the world. Snow leopard tracking in Ladakh scored 85.5 out of 100, with the index assessing experiences across six factors, including the rarity of the animal, remoteness of the location, conservation importance, exclusivity, accessibility and chances of spotting the animal.
According to NDTV, unlike a typical wildlife safari where spotting an animal can sometimes be relatively easy, tracking a snow leopard is a much more elusive experience. These big cats live high in the mountains of Ladakh and the Himalayas, where their pale grey-and-white coats help them blend into the rocky, snowy landscape.
They are also mostly seen during winter and inhabit remote areas, making an encounter far from guaranteed. For travellers, that uncertainty is part of what makes the experience so unique.
In conversation with Conde Nast Traveller, Bailey Robinson’s sales director Sarah Parker said that the relationship between rarity and remoteness was a key factor in what made the wildlife experiences stand out. The company noted that some of the most extraordinary encounters require travellers to venture deeper into remote wilderness and places that few visitors get to experience.

What Other Wildlife Experiences Made The List?
Mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda took the top spot, followed by emperor penguin expeditions in Antarctica and saiga antelope trips in Kazakhstan. Snow leopard tracking in Ladakh came fourth, while Javan rhino tracking in Indonesia ranked fifth.
India and the surrounding region also featured elsewhere on the list. Red panda tracking across Nepal, Bhutan or India ranked 15th with a score of 78.5, while greater one-horned rhino safaris in India or Nepal took the 21st spot with 74.5.
For Ladakh, the recognition puts the region’s rare wildlife encounters firmly on the global travel map. But with snow leopards relying on remote and undisturbed habitats, the growing interest in tracking them also makes responsible wildlife tourism especially important.
