Heavy monsoon rains have triggered severe landslides in Sikkim, which have cut off key roads like the Rimbi-Yuksom Road. The landslides have also significantly disrupted travel across the region. Here are all the latest updates on the current situation in the area.

Landslide Hits Sikkim’s Gyalshing District & Disrupts Travel

Travellers may need to postpone a trip to Sikkim for a few days now. According to Telegraph India, a fresh landslide happened in Sikkim’s Gyalshing district on the morning of September 3, 2026. The landslide occurred in the Singlitam and Rimbi areas and damaged the Rimbi-Yuksom Road, disrupting traffic in the region.

The authorities are now assessing the damage in the area. Immediate relief, safety and restoration measures are also in place. Reportedly, Tenzing D. Denzongpa, the District Collector of Gyalshing, also visited the affected area to review the damage. He also directed officials to ensure that all necessary safety and relief measures are taken care of for the affected and vulnerable homes in the area.

Lights To Be Installed In Vulnerable Areas

According to Telegraph India, the District Collector also directed authorities to ensure that adequate lighting, including halogen lights, is installed in areas vulnerable to landslides in Sikkim and in areas where power supply has been disrupted. The concerned department was also directed to restore damaged water pipelines at the earliest to ensure uninterrupted water supply to the affected households.

The Forest Department was asked to identify and remove trees that pose a threat to residents and infrastructure, especially in landslide-prone areas. Two houses have also been evacuated because of the landslide threat in the area. A large section apparently fell on the road and covered it with soil and heavy debris. The Rimbi-Yuksom Road is considered an important link for tourists visiting West Sikkim. The road is not safe until connectivity is properly restored.
