Madhya Pradesh’s Khurasani Imli Gets GI Tag; What Is It? How Is It Different From Regular Tamarind?

Khurasani Imli GI Tag

Khurasani Imli is the exotic and historic fruit of the iconic African baobab tree from Mandu, Madhya Pradesh. It was recently awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Officials believe that this move can protect the heritage species while opening new income opportunities for tribal communities. Here’s why this fruit is so special.

Khurasani Imli Of Madhya Pradesh Receives GI Tag

A Geographical Indication (GI) tag for food is a certification that ensures that a product originates from a specific region and has unique qualities. Many food products from India have been awarded a GI tag in the past, and this time, it was awarded to Khurasani Imli from Mandu, Madhya Pradesh. The imli grows in and around the historic town of Mandu, on the iconic African baobab tree.

According to The Times of India, the recognition will protect its heritage and will also open income streams for the tribal communities of the region, who have nurtured it for generations. The GI tag will also help Khurasani Imli reach more Indian markets, and even the global market. Tourists are also expected to take more interest in it and buy products made using this fruit.

Why Is This Fruit So Special?

According to The Times of India, the baobab tree is not native to India. It arrived in Mandu around 600 years ago through Afghan and Arab traders. Mandu’s soil and climate allowed the species to flourish, which is why the region is now considered India’s largest natural cluster of these trees. The name ‘Khurasani Imli’ might make you think that it is just like regular imli or tamarind, but it is unrelated to it. Unlike regular tamarind, Khurasani Imli is very different in taste. While tamarind is tart and tangy, this special fruit from Mandu has a mild sweet and sour flavour.

The oval-shaped, large-sized fruit, which is light green in colour, has a sweet and sour taste. Tribal communities use its pulp for ailments like fever, digestive problems and fatigue. The tangy pulp of this fruit is loaded with vitamin C, antioxidants and essential minerals. Its bark and seeds are also believed to have medicinal properties. Local sellers in and around Mandu commonly sell it as a raw fruit, dried seeds and a refreshing sherbet.
