Nobody tells you this when you’re filling out application forms at 17; the campus matters. Not because pretty buildings improve grades or because ivy-covered walls somehow make assignments less painful. But the places we spend those formative years in shape our memories. Long after the lectures are forgotten, people remember cycling under giant trees, watching sunsets from hostel rooftops, discovering hidden corners of campus, or taking the same shortcut every day because it happened to be beautiful. India has no shortage of stunning educational institutions. Some sit inside forests, some occupy architectural masterpieces studied by design students around the world, and a few became famous after Bollywood directors spotted what students had known for years. Here are eight beautiful college campuses in India that could easily double as tourist attractions.

8 Beautiful College Campuses Across India Worth Visiting Once

1. IIT Madras, Chennai

Most universities have gardens; IIT Madras has blackbucks.

Spread across roughly 620 acres, the institute sits within the Guindy National Park ecosystem, making it one of the most unusual educational campuses in the country. The roads wind through dense vegetation, giant rain trees create natural tunnels overhead, and wildlife sightings are woven into everyday life.

Students regularly encounter spotted deer on their way to lectures. The rarer blackbuck, a protected antelope species, also calls the campus home.

Founded in 1959 with technical collaboration from West Germany, IIT Madras has grown into one of India’s most prestigious engineering institutions.

2. Forest Research Institute, Dehradun

The first time many Indians saw the Forest Research Institute was not in a brochure or a textbook; it was in Student of the Year.

In Karan Johar’s fancy universe, the institute became St. Teresa’s College. In reality, it’s even more impressive.

Established in 1906, FRI occupies more than 1,000 acres at the foothills of the Himalayas. Its monumental main building, completed in 1929, is among the largest colonial-era institutional structures in India. Massive Greco-Roman columns rise above endless corridors and symmetrical lawns stretch into the distance.

The backdrop may have helped create Bollywood’s most famous fictional college, but students and visitors discover that the campus doesn’t need movie magic to leave an impression.

3. Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru

There are campuses famous for buildings and campuses famous for landscapes; IISc belongs firmly in the second category.

The institute owes its existence to a vision Jamsetji Tata developed in the late nineteenth century, eventually becoming reality in 1909 with support from the Mysore royal family. More than a century later, the campus remains one of Bengaluru’s most remarkable green spaces.

Entire avenues disappear beneath flowering canopies during bloom season. Depending on the time of year, roads can turn purple, yellow, red, or pink. Botanists have documented hundreds of plant species here, while birdwatchers regularly spot species rarely seen elsewhere in urban environments.

4. Symbiosis International University, Pune

Bodyguard Lovely Singh reporting madam…”

If you’ve watched Salman Khan’s Bodyguard, you’ve already seen one of India’s most scenic modern campuses.

The film’s college sequences were shot at Symbiosis International University’s Lavale campus, introducing audiences to a setting dramatically different from the concrete-heavy campuses usually shown in Bollywood.

The university traces its roots to 1971, when it was founded to support international students studying in India. Today, its hilltop campus overlooks the Mulshi region and stretches across a landscape that changes character with every season.

Summer reveals rolling brown hills! Monsoon transforms the same slopes into vivid green valleys. During particularly misty mornings, clouds drift across the campus grounds themselves.

5. IIM Ahmedabad

Some buildings become famous; others become symbols; IIM Ahmedabad sits in all its glory in the second category.

When American architect Louis Kahn designed the campus in the 1960s, he created something radically different from most academic institutions of the era. Massive circular openings punctuate red-brick walls, arches frame courtyards, and sunlight creates dramatic patterns across exposed surfaces.

The result is one of the most celebrated architectural campuses in Asia!

Its appearance in 2 States introduced the institution to a wider audience, but the campus had already secured a place in architectural history long before Bollywood came.

6. UWC Mahindra College, Maharashtra

Located above the Mulshi Valley near Pune, the campus was established in 1997 as part of the international United World Colleges network. Students from dozens of countries live and study here, surrounded by hills that seem to stretch endlessly beyond the horizon.

Rather than flattening the terrain, designers worked with it. Buildings follow the contours of the hillside. Stone pathways connect terraces, gardens, courtyards, and open-air gathering spaces.

On certain monsoon mornings, fog settles over the valley so completely that the landscape resembles a sea of clouds. By evening, the same hills glow gold under the setting sun.

Few educational institutions in India enjoy a natural setting this dramatic.

7. IIM Bangalore

Business schools are rarely described as romantic, but IIM Bangalore is an exception.

Designed by architect B.V. Doshi, the campus often feels like an ancient stone settlement reclaimed by greenery. Established in 1973, the institute has become almost as famous for its architecture as its academics.

More than a thousand trees grow across the campus, softening the hard geometry of the stone structures. Walking through it feels cinematic, which may explain why portions of 3 Idiots were filmed here.

The campus rewards wandering! Around almost every corner is another courtyard, another shaded pathway, or another unexpected pocket of greenery.

8. St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai

Founded in 1869, the institution stands among the finest examples of Indo-Gothic architecture in the country. Pointed arches, stained-glass windows, carved stone details, high ceilings, and wooden staircases preserve a sense of nineteenth-century grandeur that feels very rare in modern urban India.

Outside the gates, South Mumbai rushes forward at full speed. Inside, time seems to move differently.

The campus has appeared in films including Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, but its greatest achievement may be maintaining its identity amid one of the world’s most densely populated cities. More than 150 years after its establishment, it remains one of Mumbai’s most beautiful heritage landmarks.

So, which of these do you plan to visit first?
