5.5 Magnitude Earthquake In Kolkata
On Friday, at around 1:30 pm, a strong earthquake was felt in Kolkata and its adjoining areas. According to a report by Hindustan Times, preliminary reports indicate a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale. The earthquake’s epicentre was located 26 km southwest of Khulna in Bangladesh. It is quite close to the India-Bangladesh border, which is why the tremors felt intense.
Naturally, residents of Kolkata panicked, and many rushed out of their homes, buildings, offices and commercial establishments as a precautionary measure. During earthquakes, stepping out to a safe, open area is often advised. People should also remain calm and not panic.

No Damage, Injuries & Casualties Reported
Many residents took to X to share visuals of people standing outside buildings, fans swaying, and desktop monitors shaking. Some users also shared that the shaking was felt for around 8-10 seconds and was quite strong. There are no immediate reports of damage, injuries or casualties as of now. Authorities are waiting for more details on the matter.
Just a few days ago, residents of Harsul and nearby villages in Trimbakeshwar taluka of Nashik, Maharashtra, were also left anxious after a series of four earthquakes struck within 24 hours. However, the tremors were mild, and no damage was reported. Citizens were urged to remain alert and follow all precautions. Reportedly, mild tremors have been observed in the area during similar periods over the past two years, between December and February.
