A 5.7-magnitude earthquake shook Bangladesh, sending tremors that were strongly felt in Kolkata and surrounding districts. On Friday, residents reported sudden jolts, rattled windows, and a wave of panic as the region experienced one of its more noticeable seismic events in recent times. Scroll on for more details.
Earthquake Hits Bangladesh
According to The Telegraph, the earthquake struck near the Ghorashal area in Bangladesh at around 10:08 AM. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the epicentre of the quake was 10 kilometres east-southeast of Dhaka and 14 km from Narsingdi in Bangladesh. Strong tremors of the earthquake were felt in Kolkata and neighbouring districts. At least six people were killed due to the quake. Furthermore, several were injured as buildings swayed in Bangladesh.
This comes after mild-intensity earthquakes of magnitude 3.9 shook Pakistan and Afghanistan on Friday. According to NCS, the recent quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km, increasing the likelihood of aftershocks. Reportedly, shallow earthquakes are usually more dangerous than deeper ones. This is because their tremors reach the surface faster, causing stronger shaking, more damage, and a higher risk to people and buildings.

Earthquake Tremors Felt In Kolkata & Surrounding Districts
As per NDTV, intense tremors were reported by Kolkata residents after the earthquake struck Bangladesh. Reportedly, the earthquake’s effects were felt in India at around 10:10 AM for more than 20 seconds. Someone even took to social media to share that their “building shook for 30 seconds” as a result of the quake. Some social media posts also showed visuals of swinging fans and wall fixtures after the earthquake struck the region.
Beyond Kolkata, tremors were also reported in Dakshin and Uttar Dinajpur and Cooch Behar areas of West Bengal. Furthermore, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram also felt the effects of the earthquake.
