Maharashtra Government Renames Islampur

In an announcement, the Maharashtra government has now officially decided to rename Islampur village in Sangli district. The place will now be called Ishwarpur, reported the Free Press Journal. This announcement was confirmed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on his official X handle. He also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their support.

Due to this change, the Islampur Nagar Parishad will now operate under the new name Urun-Ishwarpur Nagar Parishad for all official purposes. The name change didn’t happen overnight. It went through multiple steps. This proposal went through state and central level approvals before getting final confirmation. The Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, approved this name change on November 3, 2025.

Soon after receiving this clearance, the Maharashtra government issued a formal notification under the General Administration Department. Deputy Secretary to the Government, Aniruddha Jewlikar, signed this official order on behalf of the Governor of Maharashtra.

More About The Renaming Process

According to The Free Press Journal, the official notification mentioned that the renaming was done under the authority provided by the Maharashtra District Councils and Panchayat Samitis, Gram Panchayats, and Municipal Councils Act. This means every government department will now update the new name in records, files and communication.

This is an important administrative update for the Walwa taluka area in Sangli district. Government departments will now begin updating signage, maps, documents, and systems step-by-step. Over time, Ishwarpur will take over both officially and popularly as the new name, replacing Islampur.
