The government is considering the plan to build a modern jetty due to the significant tourist traffic at the landmark. He also said the government aims to develop Mumbai into an international-standard maritime and tourist hub by promoting jetty management, introducing new modern boats and building a marina for better passenger access.
Reason Behind The New Modern Jetty
The Gateway of India witnesses heavy traffic and queues due to large passenger movement. Nitesh informed the assembly that they are planning new jetty infrastructure to ease crowd management and ensure passenger safety.
Currently, there are five jetties at the site, of which jetty numbers 1–4 are used by general passengers and are managed by the Mumbai Port Trust. Jetty number five is used for private and larger yachts, which are expected to reduce overcrowding on other jetties. Nitesh Rane also stated that congestion is increasing, especially during weekends, peak seasons, and special events. The modern jetty will promote safer passenger transfer and improved berthing capacity.
Back in November 2025, as per the official West Coast Marine site, they revealed the installation of a new jetty, No. 5, at the iconic Gateway of India, strengthening maritime infrastructure at one of Mumbai’s busiest waterfronts. Jetty No. 5 serves as one of the main access points for all private yachts and speedboats operating out of the Gateway.
