Not just that, the state is also planning to incorporate arboriculture into government policy to ensure the conservation of trees. This initiative was recently announced by Devendra Fadnavis. Keep reading to know why this decision is important for Maharashtra.

Maharashtra To Plant 300 Crore Trees

According to Hindustan Times, the announcement was made by Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the ‘Vriksh Vardhan: 2nd International Arboriculture Conference 2026’. For those uninitiated, let us briefly explain what arboriculture is. It is basically the science and practice of cultivating, managing and studying individual trees and shrubs, particularly in urban and suburban landscapes.

Arboriculture also makes it easier for experts to assess the health of trees. Based on this, they can undertake conservation measures with the help of advanced technology. The Chief Minister also spoke about how technology can help determine whether a tree is likely to fall or simply needs protection.

State Aims To Achieve 33% Forest Cover

As per a report by Hindustan Times, the state government had earlier implemented a programme to plant 50 crore trees. Now, Maharashtra plans to plant 300 crore trees to achieve the target of 33% forest cover in the state. According to the Economic Survey of Maharashtra 2025-26, the state’s total forest cover currently accounts for 16.5% of its geographical area of 3,07,713 sq km. This is below the 33% benchmark set under the National Forest Policy 1988.

Reportedly, the new plantations will be carried out using well-researched scientific data. Experts will take into account agro-climatic conditions, soil types and the suitability of various tree species for different regions. Arboriculturists, startups and technologists will also be involved to implement this initiative. The Maharashtra government’s main focus is to increase the green cover in the state without compromising on development.
