A small mistake can sometimes lead to very big consequences. A recent Madhya Pradesh High Court case highlights exactly this kind of situation, where airport security and forensic delays led to an innocent man being jailed for 57 days. Here’s what happened!

High Court Orders Compensation For Man Wrongly Arrested At Bhopal Airport

The Madhya Pradesh High Court ordered the state government to pay ₹10 lakh compensation to a businessman who was detained for 57 days. Why? Bhopal airport authorities misidentified spice packets as illegal drugs. As per Asianet News, the man was identified as Ajay Singh. While travelling to Delhi, he was stopped at Raja Bhoj Airport in Bhopal. Security officials flagged two packets in his luggage during routine screening.

During scanning, the ETD (Explosives Trace Detection) machine showed something suspicious. As per officials the aamchur packet contained 1 to 4% heroin, while the garam masala packet showed nearly 10% MDEA, a synthetic drug. Based on this alert, CISF personnel detained Ajay Singh and seized the items. An FIR was also filed at Gandhi Nagar police station in Bhopal.

However, later forensic tests proved that the suspicion was completely wrong. The Regional Forensic Laboratory first received the samples, but it could not properly test them because it did not have the required equipment. After this, officials sent the samples to the Central Forensic Laboratory in Hyderabad for further examination.

Lab Reports Reveals No Illegal Drugs

The Hyderabad laboratory later confirmed that the packets only contained aamchur powder and garam masala. However, before the final report arrived, Ajay Singh had already spent 57 days in jail.

According to Live Law, the Madhya Pradesh High Court criticised the delay and the way authorities handled the case. Officials should have waited for proper forensic confirmation before taking such serious legal action. The court added that the final forensic report should have been treated as more important.
