Ahead of World Environment Day on June 5, Mother Dairy has launched India’s first naturally degradable milk pouch. The new packaging is environmentally friendly and will leave no trace of plastic after people discard the milk pouch after use. The roll-out of these naturally degradable milk pouches is set to begin on June 5 in Delhi-NCR.
Mother Dairy To Roll Out Naturally Degradable Milk Pouches
The plastic pouches in which milk comes to our homes break down very slowly, and their microplastics can contaminate soil and water bodies. But Mother Dairy, wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), has launched India’s first naturally degradable milk pouches.
According to The Economic Times, the company will begin rolling out these new packs on World Environment Day, June 5, in Delhi-NCR. These milk pouches are designed to naturally degrade in soil without leaving a trace in the environment. The company will start the roll-out with its cow milk variant initially.
The new milk pouch uses degradable packaging technology. This enables the pouch material to transform into bioavailable wax, which is then broken down by microbes present in the soil into natural elements.

New Packaging Leaves No Trace Of Plastic
According to The Economic Times, the packaging is designed to degrade in soil within a few years. Jayatheertha Chary, Managing Director of Mother Dairy, revealed at a press conference that it took the company more than four years of research to develop a naturally degradable milk pouch that leaves no trace of plastic in the environment.
You would also like to know that the milk pouches will remain recyclable. The only key difference between these pouches and the older ones is their ability to degrade into natural elements. This new initiative aims to address the growing problem of plastic waste filling landfills, drains and open spaces across Delhi-NCR. According to officials, there will only be a change in the appearance of the milk pouches. Consumers can expect the same taste, quality and shelf life of the milk.

It should be kept in mind that the natural degradation of the packaging will occur when the pouch meets specific soil conditions and microbial activity. What do you think of this new initiative by Mother Dairy? Do you think it will help the environment?
